"I heard Judson Sickler speak at a workshop for P.E. teachers, and I was very impressed with his passion for making a difference in the lives of his students," said Deborah Rand-Hawkins, a teaching colleague."Jud has a vision for every student in his P.E. class to become a proficient mover - one who demonstrates strong character and collaborates effectively. He teaches students to become responsible for their own learning, helping them build cooperative learning skills they can use to teach one another in the classroom. He also teaches them to make healthy lifestyle choices. He sets the example for his students to go above and beyond what is expected of them and inspires them in the process."

As our AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) instructor, she challenges students to exceed high school expectations and be prepared with skills for colleges and careers. She also does a wonderful job of keeping both our students and parents informed about the requirements needed to be successful in secondary school - teaching them how to advocate for themselves once in high school."

"Marianne Chowning-Dray joined Eastside several years ago to further develop our high school math program. In fact, adding Marianne to our faculty was the single most important move we've made to better prepare our students for competitive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) majors in college," said Chris Bischof, the founder and current principal of Eastside College Preparatory School. "More importantly, Marianne has helped students thrive in our math classes at Eastside. Her passion for the subject has helped her students develop a love for math."

HENRY CURTIN

  • School: Galileo Academy of Science & Technology
  • Teaches: Geometry
  • Favorite Player: Colin Kaepernick

"Mr. Curtin was my middle school Algebra and Geometry teacher, and he made Math one of my best classes. Every day he could, he'd stay after school to work with me and my seventh-grade Algebra classmates. He never gave us the answers; he made us think and get them on our own. He challenged you in a way that made you want to learn more. He gives his students so many resources and opportunities to learn and the independence to do it," said Derick Brown, Jr., a former student of Curtin's. "Mr. Curtin also found ways to motivate us to study for tests. We got extra points on test days for wearing a tie - girls and boys. Everyone knew when it was a test day for the kids in Mr. Curtin's class because we all walked around in our ties."

She's now in eighth grade and still has a relationship with the teacher who inspired her to have a caring heart, raise funds for her school and give back to the community," said Sherri Gutierrez, the parent of one of Dixon's former students. "Whether it's a dollar contribution to a fundraiser or an encouraging hug, the world needs compassion and Mrs. Dixon has it.
